Normally the first thing that higher handicappers consider when buying a set of irons, forgiveness is a top priority for most. Cavity back irons will always offer more forgiveness than their sleeker, more blade-like counterparts and there is a great range of cavity back irons to choose from. Whether it’s Callaway’s Quantum or Ping’s G440, there is sure to be an option that appeals to everyone that’s looking for additional forgiveness and a larger sweet spot on the clubface. And by having the irons custom fit with us, you can make sure that they’re 100% set up for your game.
Ping G440 Irons
A long standing favorite for many due to their unparalleled levels of forgiveness, the Ping G440 irons lead the way for higher handicappers. They have a sleeker shape than their predecessor, the G430 irons which allows them to sit better at address. The face is 9% thinner than the G430, which combined with a lower center of gravity, offers a high launch and faster ball speeds – maximizing your distance.
Built into the back of the clubhead is the PurFlex cavity badge, which not only gives the irons a premium sound but also enhances the feel on ball strikes too. Many higher handicappers will tend to find their longer irons trickier to use, which is why Ping have made the shafts in the 4, 5 and 6 irons longer to help launch the ball higher and keep yardage gaps between clubs more consistent.

The G440 irons are also very popular with graphite shafts, with the added benefit of more height on your shots and more awareness of the clubface throughout the swing. Ping offer a wide range of shafts, all of which we have in our demo kit for custom fitting – we can find the perfect shaft for you in less than 90 minutes. As well as finding the perfect shaft, we’ll check your lie angles and every other aspect of the club that can be modified, creating a setup which is perfectly suited to you.
Ping G440 irons start from just £144.88 per iron with steel shafts and £150.10 per iron with graphite shafts. Our professionals will help you decide on the best set make-up to ensure you’re only buying the irons you need, rather than pre-determined off the shelf sets.
Cobra King MAX Irons
Cobra’s newest irons are designed especially for golfers with moderate swing speeds, who need help getting more launch and maximizing distance. They have a slight draw bias, designed to counteract the fade shape that many golfers have to their shots. A thicker clubhead than the Ping G440, the King MAX irons are ideal for the golfer that wants to feel confident in their irons every time they address the ball and doesn’t want to be put off by a sleeker, more blade style design.

A 3D printed medallion in the clubhead reduces weight particularly in the upper part of the clubhead and lowers the center of gravity, which in turn launches the golf ball higher. Off-center strikes are punished less too, so you won’t sacrifice distance or accuracy on any shots which aren’t struck quite as intended. A newly designed sole increases the bounce on the leading edge, making it easier for the club to glide through the turf and reducing the number of heavy or chunked shots.
Just like the G440 irons, the King MAX come in both steel and graphite shafts, with steel shafted irons priced at £123.34 per club and graphite shafted irons at £129.20 per club.
TaylorMade Qi Max Irons
Our final pick for the most forgiving irons is TaylorMade’s Qi Max range, with both a standard and high launch model available. TaylorMade have labelled the Qi Max as their most complete game improvement iron ever, offering exceptional distance and increased forgiveness. Patented face technology means the clubface flexes uniformly at impact, providing a straighter and more consistent ball flight – meaning you’ll hit more greens and shoot lower scores. Much like the Cobra and Ping offerings, the CG is placed lower in the long irons – however, it gradually moves higher in the short irons to increase control and precision for shots into the green.

The Qi Max HL offers even more forgiveness than the standard model, with a higher trajectory. They use lighter components to launch shots higher with more spin and have a taller clubface and wider sole to give the clubhead a larger footprint. This means that every time you set up to hit a shot, you’ll be feeling confident and will be able to fire straight at the pin.
The Qi Max & Qi Max HL cost £142.50 per iron with a steel shaft and £156.75 per iron with a graphite shaft.
